The concept of creating art with fundamentally natural items is completely fascinating to me. Clay is already a very earthy material, and adding new processes like salt-firing or wood-firing makes it all the more interesting.
Don Reitz was an em embodiment of these artistic ideals. Into his old age, despite numerous health problems, he continued making his work with as much charisma as he did in his more spring-and-spry years. His artwork and its message outlives him, as he passed away in early 2014. As a contemporary artist however, we have ample video and writings from Reitz himself that can give us insight into his methods and motives. |
